In the Indian Healthcare system, the Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) and Anganwadi Worker (AWW) stand as its fundamental pillars—indispensable and irreplaceable. These individuals serve as the important last-mile connection for delivering healthcare. A significant moment unfolded at the 75th World Health Assembly (WHA) when Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the WHO, announced ASHAs as the recipients of the Global Health Leaders Award. This recognition, particularly for their role in connecting communities with the health system, especially amid the challenges posed by COVID-19, garnered global attention and sparked jubilation in India.
In 2022, the Health Parliament decided to invest in research to understand the backbone of Indian healthcare – namely, ASHAs and AWWs covering six zones. The report Health Parliament is releasing today – 'Report on First Responders – ASHA and AWW' – highlights the ground realities of our frontline workers and makes recommendations based on the study.
